ASSASSIN’S CREED INSPIRED HOOD REVIEW

It has been over ten years since we made our very first Assassin’s Creed fan film, and one thing we learned over all the years of buying and making Assassin costumes, is that the beaked hood is very difficult to get just right.

The assassin’s beaked hood is arguably one of the most iconic features of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. So if your making your own assassin costume, it is critical you get the hood right. But if your having trouble sewing your own pattern, or simply strapped for time, this might be a great solution for you.

An Interchangeable Hood – For the fashionable assassin

We purchased the Rogue Hood, made by the Cosplay Company. And, although we decided on the gray version, it is also available in Black, Red, and Navy Blue.

It is designed to be interchangeable, so you can toss it under your jacket when the weather gets cold. But, if the color isn’t doing it for you that day, switch to one of the other options in the collection. In this manner, you can use this hood for more than just cosplay. Though, let’s be honest, your probably considering this for your next costume.

Naturally, it has a beak sewn into the pattern. Overall, if it resembles any of iconic assassin’s hoods, it would be Aguilar’s hood from the Assassin’s Creed movie – especially with the sweeping (almost scarf like) neckline.

Pros

First, what I love about this hood is that it does an excellent job of capturing the assassin silhouette. The beak is subtle but menacing.

Second, the materials are great. With fabric you would find on a premium hoodie, the hood strike a great balance between stiffness, while still being soft and comfortable. It is also lined on the inside, adding to the premium feeling. In all it has a beautiful pattern that is very well constructed.

And finally, it fits very well. Now, if you have a really big head, it might be a snug fit. But it is the perfect size to still provide a good field of vision to the wearer.

Cons

While it does look amazing, it is not perfect.

One thing to consider is that it is meant to be interchangeable. Therefore its form has meaning behind it. When you look at Altair or Aguilar’s hoods, you’ll notice they have cowls that go out to the shoulders. Since this is meant to fit under a jacket, this hood stays close to the neck. Therefore, what has become part of the iconic assassin look (the wide cowl design), isn’t really represented on this hood.

Another thing to consider is whether or not your a fan of Aguilar. If you didn’t particularly like his hood design, your out of luck. Additionally, this is not available in white, or many other colors, so if your going for a more old-school assassin look, your somewhat limited.

Finally, it is somewhat pricey for just a hood. While the quality is great, you could purchase an entire hoodie for the same price. But who said being an assassin didn’t require sacrifice?

Overall Opinion

In the end, while it is not going to be for everyone, I would still highly recommend this hood. It does a great job of capturing the assassin silhouette, and would be an excellent hood for an assassin costume. Additionally, it is not over the top obvious with the beak, so it would still be usable for everyday outerwear.

Tip

A tip that I personally use with my assassin hoods, is to pair it with a baseball cap or beanie. Something with a small bill is best, especially with this specific hood. This allows you to re-enforce the beak while providing a greater range of visibility. Especially when sewn into the hood itself, this will keep your hood on your head and out of your eyes when doing any stunts – such as running, parkour, or sword fighting. But at the end of the day, if you just wanted to see more of what is around you, I would highly recommend trying this for yourself. Be sure to use a beanie or baseball cap that is the same color as the lining of your hood.
